EXPEDITION TO BORNEO

Join us in Borneo on an adventure for science!

7 – 16 September 2024, Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei

Price: € 3,600 for a shared room, € 4,100 for a private room

For whom?

You don’t have to be a biologist! Anyone with a heart for nature, biodiversity, and conservation is welcome to join.

Travel to Borneo and immerse yourself in wild nature while at the same time learning from our experts and discovering new species. The cherry on top? You get to name them yourself and publish your findings in top-notch scientific journals! Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

On all our expeditions, we make sure our work benefits local nature conservation. For example, in Borneo, we fund local conservation students who participate on the expedition free of charge.

On this unique trip you will:

 Discover new species for science

Stay in a research station in the heart of the jungle in Ulu Temburong National Park

Work with entomologists to operate fancy insect trapping devices with exotic names like Malaise Trap, Baited Pitfall Trap, and the Winkler Eclector

• Climb into the canopy where you can spot North Borneo Gibbons, Green Broadbills, and Giant Squirrels while watching the sunrise on the jungle horizon.

• Extract DNA from snails and insects and perform your own PCR tests on them

Explore the jungle like a real old-fashioned naturalist with butterfly net, field book, and botany box at hand

Go on night jungle walks where you will train your eyes to spot fascinating animals that lurk in the dark such as gigantic stick insects and violin beetles

Learn to use the prototype portable genetics equipment from the experts who are developing it

Not for the fainthearted: dissect snails and slugs and discover all about their gender-bending genitalia

Learn the techniques for setting, pinning, and identifying insects

Learn about the secret lives of frogs, spiders, insects and other lesser-known animals of Borneo

Get a tree climbing training and climb up to 30m in the canopy on a rope

Set up, run, and complete your very own multi-day biodiversity research project (with a help of our experts)

• Write a real scientific article, and, if you want, present your results to the whole team in a mini conference setting in the field centre

Enjoy evening lectures by the expedition experts on the latest developments in rainforest biology

Post-Expedition follow up: publishing newly discovered species in scientific journals; update on the DNA results. Sharing photographs & video material.

The Expedition fee:

On all our expeditions, we make sure our work benefits local nature conservation. For example, in Borneo, we fund local conservation students who participate on the expedition free of charge.
