Tuscany, Italy

This Tuscan castle and valley are known for organic agriculture and a history of sustainably living and working with the environment, going back to the Etruscan times.
We will be based in Castello di Potentino, a castle for the 21st century that is living its own renaissance through organic wine and olive oil production, and explore the biodiversity in its surroundings. Potentino lies in a sheltered valley below Monte Amiata, an ancient volcano, and is home to centuries-old olive trees. Unlike much of the surrounding Tuscan farmland the soil of Potentino Valley has never been subjected to repeated use of chemical products. We will study the fauna of this majestic valley and compare its soil biota with conventional vineyards in Tuscany. This time we are adding something new to the program – participants will get to do their own mini research project on the biodiversity of the ancient olive trees and organic vineyards.

Secret Canyon
Montenegro

Explore the untouched wonders of Montenegro and join us in our mission to preserve this natural marvel for generations to come.
For the more adventurous-hearted, we offer a new destination: an almost unexplored 600-m-deep, 25-km-long canyon in Montenegro. Slated to be the site for a devastating hydropower dam, our expedition will document and help conserve the unique and endemic flora and fauna before it is too late. We will make daily excursions into the canyon and also to the many unexplored caves in the walls of the ravine. Using our field lab with microscopes and DNA equipment, we will document the flora and fauna of the canyon, in particular endemic species of wildlife that have evolved only here. It is these species that will be driven to extinction if the hydropower project should go ahead. Climbing or caving experience is not required, but a basic physical fitness is. We will work together with the local NGO Spasimo Komarnicu (Save Komarnica). This project received Honorary Mention at the European Citizen Science Award 2025.

Exploration and Conservation with the Wayana Indigenous People
Invited by the Wayana Indigenous people, this expedition takes us deep into a remote and rarely explored region of southeast Suriname. From our rainforest base camp in the village of Apetina, we will work closely with the local community to explore and document the region’s biodiversity — much of it studied for the first time.
This expedition is not only about discovery, but also about collaboration. The data we collect will support the Wayana’s efforts to conserve their natural resources and develop sustainable eco-tourism, helping protect this extraordinary landscape while creating long-term benefits for the community.
